Australia Post has taken a step into the digital age, launching Digital Mailbox which enables customers to receive and pay bills, communicate with providers and store important documents such as passports and birth certificates. The free service is hosted by cloud technology and will have bank level security. Customers can connect using any computer or mobile device. Launching the initiative, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy, said Australia Post Digital Mailbox, had “the potential to revolutionize the mail industry”. Senator Conroy also said that “For over 200 years, Australia Post has connected Australians with each other and the rest of the world through letters. They are now embracing the digital world, realizing that 21st century technology provides them with exciting opportunities”. The Department of Human Services and the Australian Taxation Office are taking part in a proof-of-concept trial of the network, while Telstra, AMP Westpac, ANZ, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Link Market Services, National Australia Bank and Yarra Valley Water have already signed up to use it. Digital mailboxes are becoming hot property as government-owned Australia Post, which is investing $2 billion in modernizing and digitizing its network, fights a battle in federal court over alleged trademark infringement. Australia Post is arguing that a joint venture between listed outfit Computershare, Fujifilm and tech provider Zumbox called Digital Post Australia (DPA), is a trademark infringement "One of the Government's National Digital Economy Strategy goals is that by 2020, four out of five Australians will choose to engage with the government online. The new Australia Post Digital Mailbox is an excellent example of the kind of service that will enable the achievement of that goal," Senator Conroy said. Australia Post CEO and Managing Director Ahmed Fahour said that "Both businesses and Government agencies are realizing the potential of new platforms such as the Australia Post Digital Mail Box to open up a trusted new avenue for communicating and transacting safely online”. The joint venture taking on Australia Post to become the nation’s leading internet mailbox provider has vowed to continue fighting through the courts despite racking up over $1 million in legal fees. Digital mailboxe is a product designed to be used by companies such as Commonwealth Bank or AGL to send bills via the internet rather than through the mail. Australia Post also plans to use the Mail Box to communicate with its 30,000 employees. Earlier this month, Digital Post chief executive officer Randy Dean expected digital mail to cost businesses 60 to 70 percent less than regular mail. http://www.connectedaustralia.com
