It was in the year of 1895 that China had shaped a tightly bound to the basketball. Throughout the way of about 110 years, basketball movement had had a well mixture with Chinese culture. Basketball has done huge benefits to Chinese people, like the promotion of physical condition and the improvement of sports career. It is a common sense for all of us that America is the place of origin for the basketball. So its advance in the United States is wholly different from that in China. Its introducing and improvement in China has connection with the unique social background. Let us have a review of its source. In 1840, the Opium War was triggered by the Great Britan. Chinese traditional culture was under excessive blow and aggression from the mighty western culture. It was just under the surroundings that the modern sports was brought in China. In 1895, the basketball activity was brought in the rail of Chinese sports by an American preacher. And since then, the activity has begun its journey in China. Generally speaking, the trip can be divided into five stages. The period of enlightenment and promotion lasting from 1895 to 1927, was the very beginning period. Although Tianjin was its first landing place, various other districts had as well begun the activity, like the middle of China, the north of China, the east of China and so on. And the basketball movement even had appeared amongst all types of sports in National Sports, which had its appearance for three times. In spite of its development in China, it was still firmly controlled by the American. In the second period China had begun its self development in the basketball activity. Since the reign of the Kuomintang, China had regained the independence in sports. And after the Anti-Japanese War, the basketball movement had experienced a rapid booming. Shanghai especially was dynamic in the sphere. During that cycle, the right to develop sports was fully under our Chinese rule. And there were large gathering of men of talents. The third phase was a half-closed and self-developing state, which lasted from 1950 to 1974. This was due to the political factor. In this phase, the Chinese basketball activity had gone through its period of best. Lots of spheres about the basketball movement had under great development, whether in the system or the practical level. It showed Chinese people's ability to stand steadily amid the worldwide peoples. The forth stage was the pioneering stage, lasting from 1974 to 1994. With the operation of reform and opening policy, the way of the developing basketball had been broadened. During the period lots of athletes bore in their minds the hope of revitalizing China through sports. While after the short development, the basketball activity has come into an embarrassing phase. The basketball movement had stepped into professionalizing phase with the arrival of market economy. But for the athletes, there was no more responsibility and enterprising spirit. The prospect of Chinese basketball movement was no longer as vigorous as that in the 90s. Though a few big stars like Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian had entered the NBA and were well exploited by a few advertisers like Asics, the most part of Chinese basketball province was overcast.
