SMITHFIELD -- Johnston County students now are permitted to wear nose rings and facial jewelry - given that their school principal doesn't deem the accessories an interruption or possibly a health or safety hazard. The Johnston County school board voted unanimously Tuesday to alter the teachers system's dress-code policy cheap jewelry facial jewelry. The old policy banned jewelry for the nose, tongue, lips, cheek or eyebrow. The advance comes 90 days after Johnston County Schools settled case that made its strategy to federal court. Clayton Senior high school student Ariana Iacono sued school leaders this past year after she was repeatedly suspended for refusing to eliminate her small nose stud. Iacono said she must be exempt on the rule because she belonged to the Church of Body Modification, a little-known religious group that embraces body piercings and tattoos. Johnston Superintendent Ed Croom said the insurance policy change failed to take place resulting from the lawsuit. He was quoted saying the board routinely reviews its policies and makes changes. "I think it's vital to realize that this can be separate and in the evening law suit not too long ago while using Iacono case," Croom said Tuesday. "That really is not to do with this." Croom said a committee of six school principals got together and suggested the dress-code change. The revolutionary rule gives principals autonomy in deciding whether facial jewelry disrupts learning or poses pearls jewelry threat, Croom said. Already this school year, principals have asked students to take out jewelry. "We've had simply no issue with it," Croom said. School board member Butler Hall said the fresh rule gives principals leeway in enforcing the insurance plan without appearing arbitrary or capricious. "It's a better-worded policy," Hall said. Underneath the old rule, facial jewelry was banned, but principals will make a "reasonable accommodation" to allow students to wear the jewelry to get a "sincerely held religious belief." But contained in the lawsuit settlement, a judge ordered Johnston schools crystal jewellery away school principals' authority to make a decision whether a student's beliefs are "sincerely held." |
