Deep Fat Fryers Can Be Dangerous. It should be apparent that oil in fryers gets really super hot, but around the holidays, per insurance companies like State Farm, fryer fires seem to rise way beyond the norm. The states with the most fryer fires in the past years are Texas, Illinois and Ohio, and most of the problems occur around Thanksgiving. So, how does one get a deep fried thanksgiving turkey or fish or fries without burning down the place. I have a few suggestions, that are basically common sense answers. Since these accidents occur around the holidays, we can probably assume there is some form of alchohal involved in the burning down of a kitchen. So plan number one would be to NOT DRINK while frying. In fact, let me go a step futher and say to NOT DRINK until the fryer is turned off and cooled down. Another suggestion is never throw anything Frozen into a hot deep fryer. Cold Iced Chicken wings and hot oil are a recipe for disaster. Every home, and especially in the kitchen should be equipped with an up to date fire extinguisher, that is easy to grab in the case of an emergancy. Some states require renters to have CO2 Extinguishers present in the Kitchen and Attached Garage. The good and bad of deep fried cooking is simple. An oil burn really sucks. I mean super duper bad. I suggest putting the burned area under cold water right away, trying to produce a blister (if the burn is not too bad). Naturally 3rd degree burns need emergancy care. I have burned myself before (not with a fryer, but with poptarts) and by placing my finger directly under cold water , actually helped it blister in about 15 mintues. Blisters are the bomb when you burn yourself (but don't open one up). Ok, now for the good. There is nothing better than Fried "whatever" - Fries, Chicken, Breaded vegies, even twinkies. For some reason, fried food tastes great. |
